Obituary

SUFFOLK- William Garst Saunders, 93, passed away February 1, 2018. He was the son of the late William Irby Saunders and Mary Reba Garst Saunders. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his four siblings, John Vaden Saunders, Robert Sheldon Saunders, James Pfitser Saunders and Mary Fanny Saunders Beasley.

Bill was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps. He served in Naples, Rome, and northern and southern France and received the Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged September 8, 1945.

After the war, Bill was a 41-year employee for Eastern Air Lines. Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Niceville, FL for almost 30 years. He was an avid tennis player, an active member of Kiwanis Club and a faithful servant at Crosspoint Methodist Church in Niceville. Following their recent move to Virginia, Bill attended Green Acres Presbyterian Church, where he was a faithful member of the Bible Class.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlotte Holcombe Saunders; his daughters Anne Shoaf of Chesapeake, VA and Ellen Faust (Pete) of Concord, NC; and his son W. Daniel Saunders (Liz) of Delaware City, DE; grandchildren Kristin Shoaf (Jim), Sara Shoaf Burnette (Roger), Will Shoaf (Katie), PJ Faust (Lauren), Laura Faust, Janet Saunders (Adrian), and Curtis Saunders; and nine great-grandchildren: Isabel, Noah and Jeremiah Pavlik, Sam and Jake Burnette, Emma and Natalie Nida, Lucy Shoaf, and PJ and Lauren's son, coming in April.

A celebration of his life will be held at Green Acres on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Keith Curran officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ligonier Ministry, 421 Ligonier Ct., Sanford, FL 32771. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
