Obituary

First Lieutenant William "Bill/Billy Mac" David McCarter, Sr., born on September 5, 1930, joined his Lord and Savior on July 20, 2023 at the age of 92. He is the son of Virginia Mae Gordon Chavis and Lewis/Luther Howard McCarter.

Bill grew up in Tennessee and loved cheering on the University of Tennessee Volunteers. While in Tennessee, he was a Golden Gloves champion boxer for his weight class. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1947. Bill served in Vietnam from March of 1965 until September of 1967 with the 3rd Marine Division. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for his heroism. Bill received a field commission as 1st Lieutenant in August 1967. His official retirement after also being in the Reserves was in early 1978.

He received many awards and medals but was most proud of the National Defense Medal (2nd Award), Good Conduct Medal (5th and 6th Award), Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Accommodation Medal.

Bill attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1964, where he majored in English Literature.  He also attended the University of Richmond in 1970, pursuing a degree in Information Technology.  After retiring from the Marines, Bill became a banker and worked his way up to Vice President of Technology and Operations for a major bank. He retired in 1992.

Bill was an avid golfer and a member of the Riverfront Golf Course in Suffolk, Virginia. He was especially proud of the senior group with which he played. He made many friends with his quick smile, wit, and generosity to help others. He played golf up until 2022.

Bill was a Godly man. He loved his Lord, family, country and friends. In his younger years he was a Mason.  After returning to his roots as a Catholic, he became very involved with the Knights of Columbus and served in many roles, including Grand Knight.

Bill is predeceased by the love of his life, Carolyn Bowles McCarter; they were married for 57 glorious years. He is also predeceased by his sister, Alma McCarter Holloway, and two twin grandchildren, Riley and William McCarter. He is survived by his three children: William David McCarter, Jr. (Debbie), Gwendolyn McCarter-Carter, and Martin Howard McCarter (Tammie); eleven grandchildren: Lindsay Riddle, Morgan McCarter Leishear (Doug), Hunter McCarter, Martin Carter (Marcia), April Rushing (Dustin), Kyle Carter (Lori), Brandon Mills (Heather), Kelly Bacon (Travis), Chase McCarter, Joseph Daigle (Rebecca), and Jonathan Daigle; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
