Tony Kang Yung, 89, passed away October 9, 2026. He was born August 12, 1937, in Chungshon Hsien, Kwantung Province. He resided in Taiwan from May 4, 1954 to April 1975.

Tony was presented his commission on graduation from the Taiwanese Naval Academy by President Chiang Kai-Shek. He retired with twenty years’ service as a Captain in the Taiwan Navy.

Tony was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Tana Leas Yung; infant son Andy; and daughter Christina Ledbetter Blad (Tim).

Tony and Tana’s early years were spent experiencing the Orient. Then Tony began his education at Purdue University, where he graduated with a degree in Nuclear Electrical Engineering at the top of his class. He went on to retire with more than thirty years from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.

Tony was a diehard Duke fan. He played numerous instruments, sang, and danced. He had a wonderful sense of humor, along with a penchant for practical jokes. Often Tony would be caught putting up the neighbor’s trash cans and giving away his pine straw. Tony was always the perfect gentleman and benevolent to a fault.

He is survived by his three grandsons, Blaine Ledbetter (Savannah), Christian Ledbetter, and Carter Ledbetter; great-granddaughter Scarlet Ledbetter; and nephew Cheung King Kit (Billy) of Happy Valley, Hong Kong, China.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 20, at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High St., Portsmouth. Tony will be interred with his wife 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 21, at Olive Branch Cemetery, 2 Cpl. J. M. Williams Ave., Portsmouth.
