Obituary

PORTSMOUTH—Our Tana has left us now. On April 12, 2022, she answered God's call to return to Him, and the gift of Tana's presence in our lives came to an end.

Her life's journey began when her parents, Norman David Leas and Alice Carter Leas, brought her into the world on February 26, 1945 in Columbia, Pennsylvania, a small town in "Pennsylvania Dutch Country," an area she cherished all her life and which will be her final resting place. It is also where she met her husband-to-be, Tony Yung. After a whirlwind courtship—three months—they married and began their fifty-four-year odyssey. Their earliest years were spent savoring the mysteries of the Orient (seven years), then Hawaii, before returning to less exotic but rewarding stays in Purdue University, until Tony's engineering profession brought them to Portsmouth.

Tana was predeceased by her parents and her infant son, Andy. She is survived by her beloved Tony; her daughter, Christina Carter Blad; son-in-law, Timothy John Blad; and three grandsons: Blaine Andrew Ledbetter, Christian Anthony Ledbetter, and Carter Leas Ledbetter; and a host of friends whose lives will be much the poorer without her.

It is not possible to provide a fair sense of a good life in just a few words. Thus, a feeble effort must suffice. Tana was a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Portsmouth. She held several meaningful positions in the business community before finding her true vocation. She served as the Supervisor of the Civil Division of the Portsmouth General District Court with expertise, efficiency, and accommodation, and molded a team which led to this accolade from the legal community: "This office hasn't experienced a lot of the incompetency problems which other clerk's offices have. Pound for pound, the Portsmouth General Court Civil Division, with its limited staffing, is the best run in the Hampton Roads region."

But there was more than one side to Tana. Her quiet and sedate demeanor cleverly concealed her penchant for mischief, for she also served as the leader of the "Llama Patrol," a small secret society which existed for the sole purpose of playing anonymous tricks on the Court's judges. She was also a diehard Duke fan and was among the few who had the ability to secure special memorabilia for her friends, from "Coach K" his very self. On trips to the "homeland" in PA Dutch Country, she would return with a car loaded with cheeses, sausages, and BACON among the best known to humanity, and promptly deliver these very special treats to her friends.

But along with all of her goodness you must be told of her major flaw. If you did her a small kindness, she would insist on doing you a larger one. She always figured if you were even in the exchange of kindnesses that she was behind—and that woman was not having it. She always thought of others before herself. So it is not surprising—it is indeed so typical—that her last thoughts were of her dear, dear Tony, her special, special Mary Lou, and her lovely daughter with impeccable taste, Christina. While waiting in the ER for a hospital bed, Tana said, "I am worried about you two. I am fine, I am comfortable, and there is no reason for you to wait here. Go home, and I will call you when I get to a room." Sadly, that call never came.

Yes, our Tana has left us now, but she will live on in our hearts and memories, forever.

A service for Tana will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High St., Portsmouth. The family will receive friends an hour prior. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Special Olympics (support.specialolympics.org) would be appreciated. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
