Susan Ruth McSparron Smith

PORTSMOUTH – Susan Ruth McSparron Smith, 69, passed away February 18 ^th , 2023 after a two year battle with cancer.

Susan was born on May 23, 1953 in San Fernando, California, to the late Jack and Guylene McSparron.  She was their middle child between sister, Janice and brother, Allen.  Growing up, Susan lived in southern California, Sacramento, Maryland, and later returned to southern California. She graduated from Palos Verdes High School and attended University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. Trained as a dental assistant, Susan worked in that field for several years.

Carl and Susan met in their teens as their families attended church together. They married June 22, 1974 when Carl was a LT(j.g.) in the United States Coast Guard. Susan spent the next 18 years as a Coast Guard wife, living in Hawaii, Virginia, Puerto Rico, Miami, and Charleston, South Carolina.  Daughter Corrie was adopted in 1983 in Virginia. Son Peter was adopted in 1990 in Miami. The family moved to Chesapeake, Virginia in 1992, where they lived in the same house until 2022. She took great delight in her grandson Jackson who knew her as "Gigi."

While living in Hawaii, Susan started her Mary Kay career which spanned four decades. She was a company director for several years and won two red Pontiacs for her performance in the business. She enjoyed selling Mary Kay and the lifelong friendships she made along the way.

Susan was an active member of Green Acres Presbyterian Church.  She served twice as an elder and also taught Sunday school for twenty years.

Susan was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Guylene McSparron, and her son, Peter. She is survived by Carl, her husband of 48 years, daughter Corrie Warren and husband, James, sister Janice Burger and brother Allen McSparron, grandson Jackson Warren, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Green Acres Presbyterian Church, 3135 Hanley Ave., Portsmouth, Virginia at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday February 22, 2023.
