Ruth Stewart Robertson, 86, of Portsmouth, Virginia passed away March 10, 2016 surrounded by family in her home in Portsmouth.
Ruth was born in Greensboro, North Carolina to Percy and Dewey Stewart. She came to Portsmouth with her family at the age of 12 and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1948.
While working at the Famous, in downtown Portsmouth she bumped into Herbert Robertson who was in the real estate business across the street. They fell in love and were then engaged after a prolonged lover's spat that ended in a proposal.
She was a former member of the Portsmouth Woman's Club and along with Herbert, was a co-youth leader for the Monumental Methodist senior MYF during the late sixties.
Ruth was always an avid participant and member of her "groups" that included Mahjong, Bridge, and "Needle Point". It was always the community and relationship that brought her back. She cherished those times together with friends.
Ruth especially loved the time spent with her children and grandchildren in later years and was always ready to offer up her hearty and infectious laugh when enjoying time with family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Percy and Dewey, her sister, Jeanette, and her husband, Herbert.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Alice of Annapolis, Maryland, her two sons Ralph and Bruce and 3 grandchildren, Debbie, Jennifer, and Sam as well as five great grandchildren.
