Ruth Umphlette Broughton, 80, passed away Friday, September 27, 2013.

Mrs. Broughton, a native of Gates County, NC, was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, retired Portsmouth Police Captain Robert G. "Bobby" Broughton. She was a graduate of the King's Daughters Hospital School of Nursing, Portsmouth, and retired from Portsmouth General Hospital after many years of service as a highly respected Head Nurse. She was formerly active in many charitable organizations including the Portsmouth General Hospital Auxiliary, the Emblem Club of BPO Elks Lodge #82, and the Women's Auxiliary of Knights of Columbus #418. She was a member of Churchland Baptist Church.

She is survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews and many friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in Olive Branch Cemetery, by the Rev. Larry B. Coleman, followed by a reception at Knights of Columbus, 519 County St., Portsmouth. Friends may join the family Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association 6350 Center Drive, Ste. 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.
