Obituary

SUFFOLK- Roy Van Norman Waterman, 95, passed away peacefully at his home in Suffolk on July 27, 2019.  He was born May 12, 1924 to Arthur and Florence Waterman in St. James, Trinidad.

Roy worked at several newspapers in Trinidad as a printer.  After immigrating to the U.S., he attended New York Training Center where he graduated as a nurse's assistant in 1973. He then worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center caring for people and doing a job he enjoyed until his retirement in Nov. 1991.

As a child, Roy was athletic and loved sports. He ran track, played soccer and cricket and loved anything dealing with the outdoors.  As an adult, watching sports became his pastime.  His favorite sport to watch was baseball and as a Bronx, N.Y. resident for the majority of his life, he was a die-hard Yankees fan.

Roy was a kind person who touched many hearts. He was a source of strength for his family. He had a great sense of humor and was very charismatic. He will always be remembered as vibrant, energetic, stubborn at times, fun to be with and easy to talk to. He will also be known as a dancing machine, his favorite music was calypso and slow music. He traveled to Trinidad many times for carnival, which he enjoyed immensely.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Daphne (Roberts) and Joyce (Greaves); his brothers, Rudolph and Vernon; and his sons, Victor and Michael.  Roy is survived by his wife of 48 years, Juliana of Suffolk; his sons, Joseph and Rennie of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his daughters, Valerie (Neville) Joseph of Queens, N.Y., and Allison (Jeffery) Day of Suffolk; his sisters: Gloria Wilson of Trinidad and Monica "Monix" (Kenny) Beckles of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He lived a fulfilled life surrounded by love, joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories. He was a cherished father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, friend and most of all a wonderful husband to sweet Juliana.  He will be greatly missed.

The family of Roy wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation for the many acts of kindness, prayers, and words of encouragement offered during our time of sorrow. We will always remember your kindness and love.
