Robert Gordon Thomas, 89, of Portsmouth, Virginia passed away peacefully on August 28, 2020 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Florence, South Carolina 1931, son of the late John Hilton Thomas and Marie (White) Thomas. In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Trengove and brother Lynwood Thomas.
Robert Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Claudia (Hussey)Thomas; three daughters, Robin Cogswell (Chris) of Chesapeake, VA; Lori Ransone (Charlie) of Portsmouth, VA; Marsha Thompson (Bert) of Chesapeake, VA; nine grandchildren, Brooke Barefoot (Bobby), Christopher Cogswell, Paul Cogswell, Charles Ransone, Claire Ransone, Bethany Thompson, Madison Thompson, Alivia Thompson and Ava Thompson and a great grandchild on the way in January; sister Marilyn Mackiewicz (Joe Pappano] of Villanova, PA and brother Lowell Thomas (Susan) of Sebring, FL and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Thomas graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Portsmouth, VA in 1950. He owned and operated Robin Van & Storage, Inc. for twenty five years. He served several terms throughout his career as the President of the American Movers Association.
Gordon loved boating and fishing, enjoyed gardening and always had a keen sense of humor. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren grow.
A service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 3312 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, VA 23703. Interment will follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens 4569 Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk, VA 23435.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to The Shriners Hospital for Children of Greenville, SC or Centenary United Methodist Church. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
