Obituary

Onnie Geraldine Coppedge, 96, passed away Thursday October 9, 2014. A native of Middletown, NY, she was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and was predeceased by her husband John H. Coppedge, Jr.

She is survived by her son, John H. Coppedge, III of Los Angeles; grandson, Brian M. Creecy and wife Lisa of Virginia Beach and great-grandson, Ryan M. Creecy of Toano, VA. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Martha Ann Creecy; grandson, J. Douglas Creecy, Jr. and granddaughter, Lori Ann Creecy.

After graduation from high school Onnie attended secretarial school and upon completion went to work for a local Middletown bank. While on vacation with friends in Virginia Beach, she met her future husband, Jack at the Cavalier Beach and Cabana Club and they later became long time members. After marrying in New York on July 4, 1941, the newlyweds moved to Portsmouth. Within months of their wedding, the U.S. became embroiled in WW II and Onnie went to work in the Admiral's office at the Naval Station in Norfolk.

With the war over, in 1948 Onnie and Jack along with his sister, Hope and her husband Ray started the wholesale business, Portsmouth Electric Supplies. Onnie also opened Pabs Popular Clothing in Cradock with a friend as partners. However, with two small children, she preferred her most favorite career, and that was as a homemaker and stay-at-home mom. This gave her the most fulfillment in life.

Onnie enjoyed many activities including bowling, golf, gardening, traveling and politics. She won several trophies for her prowess at both bowling and golf while a member of Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club. She loved gardening and was a founding member of the Sterling Point Garden Club.

Onnie was also a founding member of the Portsmouth Republican Women, and for many years was a delegate to the state conventions in Richmond; and for several years she represented the State of Virginia as a delegate to the Republican Women's national conventions. As a result of her tireless work for the Republican Party she received an invitation and attended the President's Inaugural Ball in 1973.
