Matthew John Stavola, Jr.
December 2, 1923 - February 12, 2017.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, son of the late Matthew J. and Mollie (Lebowitz) Stavola. A graduate of Morgan C. Bulkeley High School in Hartford, CT, he was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Air Force in the South Pacific.
Mr. Stavola arrived in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1960 where he began work in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard's Design Division from which he retired in December 1983.
He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Portsmouth, and of the Holy Family Retreat League.
Besides his wife, Mary (Facenda) Stavola, he leaves his son, Matthew J. Stavola, III, (wife/Nanette), his daughter Crystal A. DeGroff (husband/Mike), six grandchildren, Adam Stavola (wife/Katie), Patrick Stavola(wife/Sue), Mallory Stavola, Megan DeGroff, Jack DeGroff, and Shelby DeGroff and three great grandchildren.
A private family funeral will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, Matthew would wish the kindness of any memorial donations to be made to "The Little Guild of St. Francis" or any SPCA of the donor's choice.
