Obituary

Mary Ainsworth Hook of Portsmouth died Sunday; she was 94.

A native of Portsmouth, she was born Mary Armistead Ainsworth on July 19, 1926 to the late Andrew William and Mary Armistead Ainsworth.  She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in 1947.

She married the late Henry Lewis Hook of Houston on August 16, 1947 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Portsmouth.  At the time of his death in 2009, they had been married for 62 years.

For more than 50 years she was an active volunteer in numerous service organizations.  She was a founding member and past President of the Portsmouth Service League; a past President of Portsmouth General Hospital Auxiliary; and a past President of Portsmouth Health, Welfare, and Recreational Planning Council.  She served on the Board of Directors of United Way of South Hampton Roads.  She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.  She was a was a fifth-generation member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, where she served on the altar guild for more than 50 years and was President of the Episcopal Church Women from 1995 to 2010.

She is survived by a son, Andrew H. Hook of Chesapeake, and his wife Maureen; a daughter, Mary H. Korty of Portsmouth, and her husband Robert; four grandchildren: Robert L. Korty of College Station, Tex.; David A. Korty and his wife Lauren of San Diego, Calif.; Alexis H. Mangan and her husband Scott of Hoboken, N.J.; and Lauren A. Hook of Arlington, Virginia; and two great-granddaughters, Rebecca and  Katherine Korty of San Diego.

A private memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church.  Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.  Memorial contributions can be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or to the Portsmouth Humane Society.
