NEWPORT NEWS--Mary Evelyn Barham Babb, 91, died February 3, 2022 at the Chesapeake in Newport News. She was the daughter of the late Edward A. Barham and Serena Williams Barham.

Mrs. Babb was born in Richmond and lived her early years in Sussex County. She moved to Portsmouth in 1939 and was educated in the Portsmouth Public Schools. She was graduated from Madison College (JMU) in the class of 1951 and taught at South Norfolk High School (Oscar Smith).

Mrs. Babb was preceded in death by her beloved husband, The Honorable Robert F. Babb, and her brother, Dr. Edward A. Barham, Jr. She is survived by her son, Robert F. Babb, Jr., her daughter, Mary Babb Morris, four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Mrs. Babb and her husband resided in Portsmouth from 1953 until 2004, when they moved to the Chesapeake Retirement Center in Newport News. She was an active member of Churchland Baptist Church for over 50 years. She was a member of the Special Studies Class. She was also a member of the Portsmouth Service League; former member of the Elizabeth River Garden Club; and served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 12, at Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery, 3031 Churchland Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23321.
