Martha Boylan Thomson, 75, of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away peacefully in her home on April 10, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and her faithful dog, Astro.
Martha, a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, was born on September 9, 1949, in Portsmouth, Virginia. She was a proud graduate of Cradock High School, Class of 1967, and Virginia Wesleyan College. Martha built a fulfilling career at Bell Atlantic and later at American Funds, where she formed lasting friendships and made a meaningful impact on colleagues and clients alike.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin H. Boylan and Elizabeth W. Boylan, and her sister, Dr. Nancy B. Alford. Martha is survived by her devoted husband, James G. Thomson; her twin sister, Margaret "Maggie" Boylan; her brother-in-law, Rev. John B. Alford Jr.; her children, David Ellis (Karen), James Thomson Jr. (Fernanda), and Jennifer Buss (Brian); her grandchildren, Jordan Buenrostro (David), Kristin Fritts, Paris Buss, Kaden Buss, Lotus Buss, Lovie Thomson, and James Thomson III; and her great-granddaughter, Rayna Fritts.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the many nurses and aides from Interim Hospice Care for their compassionate support and care over the years. Martha's warmth, grace, and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 28, at The Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, Virginia. A reception will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Martha's memory to the National Alzheimer's Association or Oasis Social Ministry . Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
