PORTSMOUTH- Margurite George Johnson, 91, formerly of St. Paul Parish in Portsmouth, Virginia, passed away at Beth Sholom Village in Virginia Beach on March 1, 2019, after battling years of dementia. She was born in Selma, North Carolina to the late Lafayette and Nazeera George.
Margurite was a graduate of Sacred Heart College. She loved to play bingo, sew, put together puzzles, play the piano, sing, and watch golf.
In addition to her parents, Margurite was predeceased by her husband, Russell Cox Johnson, who died in early 1976; her sisters Mary Anthony, Clarine Assef, Julia Joseph, Putronia Driscoll, RosaBelle Shaw; and brothers John George and George George.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Linda Johnson and Theresa Johnson Corwin and wife Debbie; three sons, George Johnson, Joseph Johnson and wife Susan, and Lawrence Johnson; five beautiful grandchildren, Becky, Katie, Chris, Melissa, and Aaron; four beautiful great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Evan, Devin, Kylee—and a fifth on the way, Russell Miguel; a host of nieces and nephews; and longtime childhood friend Mary Lou Attayek.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High St., Portsmouth. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 8, at Olive Branch Cemetery, 2 Cpl. J. M. Williams Ave., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, alz.org. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
We would like to thank all of the nurses and caregivers at Beth Sholom and Hospice and Palliative Care of Tidewater for taking such good care of Mom and treating her with dignity and respect. You are all amazing. Mom, you no longer have to struggle with your memory, for you are now in a place where your mind is sharp as a tack. Say hello to Dad for us. We love and miss you!
