Obituary

PORTSMOUTH - Margaret Virginia "Ginny" Mahoney, 78, passed away August 29, 2015 in Norfolk General Hospital. Ginny was born in Portsmouth, VA. She was the daughter of the late Edward Sebastian and Margaret Cassell Mahoney. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Jo Ferguson, brothers, Edward S. and John F. Mahoney, Survivors include her sister-in-law Rebecca Mahoney, her nieces, Deborah Darlington, Lisa Schuda, nephews, John Mahoney Jr., William Mahoney, Michael Mahoney and Steven Mahoney along with several great nieces/nephews, cousins and family members, including her special caregiver, Valencia Ballard.
Margaret was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and lived in the home of the owner of Circle of Friends, from March 1, 1999 until God called her home. Margaret was very much a part of the family and attended family activities and reunions and was known and loved by everyone. After a few months, she was joined by one other friend in the home. They shared a room, and would become friends for life. Margaret also attended a day support program in Portsmouth, where she took great pride in having her nails polished every week. She would proudly show others the latest polish that she had chosen and let everyone know who took the time out to make her nails look so great. Margaret was caring, witty, charming and had a great sense of humor and comedic timing. She loved all kinds of music and once sang a phrase to a famous gospel song, "We fall down, but we get up", when her roommate took a slight fall. She loved her family, and would often talk about living with her aunts as a child and how much she loved her siblings. Margaret was great at remembering the smallest details of a conversation with anyone, especially if they mentioned the names of family members. She would meet someone only once, but upon seeing them again, remember that they had a son or daughter and would ask how they were doing. Margaret loved everyone that she met and never met a stranger. She never uttered a negative word about anyone, and was always concerned if someone was sick or going through some problem in life. She was truly a rare soul and lived a life of love and caring that everyone should try to live. She was loved and will be missed by all who crossed her path.
