Obituary

SUFFOLK--The family of Margaret E. "Peg" Moring sadly announces her passing on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at Harmony at Harbour View in Suffolk, VA. Peg was born November 22, 1926 in Portsmouth, VA and was the daughter of the late George Frederick Michael Elsasser, Sr. and Bertha Rountree Elsasser. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Christopher "B.C." Moring, Jr. and one son, Michael Lee Moring.

Peg grew up in the Port Norfolk section of Portsmouth and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, where she was a member of Wilson Tri-Hi-Y, served in student government, and was a cheerleader. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia and taught 1st and 2nd grades at the Great Bridge School. Peg was swept off her feet by "B.C." Moring, a young Marine from across the river in Norfolk. Peg and B.C. jitterbugged through a whirlwind romance. They began dating in the spring of 1949, became engaged in July, and were married in November of the same year. They eventually settled in Peg's beloved Portsmouth, where they raised their four children.

Through the years, Peg was involved in her church and community. Covered-dish suppers at Broad Street Methodist Church — where she grew up — were greatly enhanced by her heavenly creations. Her critique of a good meal was often confirmed with the exclamation, "That was the best thing I ever put in my mouth," a refrain oft repeated by her children and grandchildren to this day. Peg was active in the Portsmouth Junior Women's Club, Portsmouth Women's Forum, Portsmouth Assembly, John Tyler Little League, and the Garden Club. She volunteered with the Crisis Center for more than twenty-five years.

A wonderful mother and grandmother, Peg rarely missed anyone's school activities or athletic events. Her enthusiastic support was legendary. Once, while watching one of her grandchildren, she clapped so hard her diamond popped out of her engagement ring. It was mercifully retrieved from under the bleachers by a search party of other supportive grandparents she had befriended.

Peg never met a stranger. Her outgoing personality and charm brought her many friends whom she loved and treasured through the years. An accomplished bridge player, she was active in several local bridge clubs and often substituted in others.

Peg loved all things Virginia, with Portsmouth, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Sandbridge Beach being the best parts. She was quick to point out Portsmouth highlights such as the Children's Museum, the Commodore Theatre, and dollar wine night at the Circle Restaurant.

Peg is survived by her daughter Melissa Hubbard and her husband, Kevin L. Hubbard of Chesapeake; her son Chris Moring and his wife, Kate Kabler Moring of Suffolk; son Mark Moring and his wife Nina Donner Moring of Onley, VA; former daughter-in-law, Annette Tonkin Brooks of Suffolk; eight grandchildren: Christopher, Brandon, Ryan, Pretlow, Loren, Pete, Sarah, and Paul; her very special nieces Demi, Lynn, Maryann; nephew Rick; and nine great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held. If so inclined, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Chas Foundation, a mental illness family support organization in the tradition of the Crisis Center. Checks can be mailed to The Chas Foundation, 7400 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23505, or thechasfoundation.org. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
