CHESAPEAKE - Margaret Oast Mitchell, 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 01, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in April 1938 to Margaret Lockhart Oast and Edward Linscott Oast in Portsmouth, Virginia.
She graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1960 from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and remained a devout Tar Heel fan. She retired from Portsmouth Public Schools in 1993, where she had worked as a teacher and library media specialist.
Preceded in death by her parents and brother, Edward Linscott Oast, Jr., she is survived by her husband of 40 years, Peter Richard Mitchell; her son, Frederick G. Hale, Jr., and his wife, Billie; her two daughters, Cynthia Linscott Hale, and Elizabeth Glenn Hale; and her grandchildren, Merriweather Gordon, Dalton Hale, Jackson Hale, and Alyssa Largena.
She was an active member and former deacon of Churchland Baptist Church. A graveside memorial service will be held at Churchland Baptist Church on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the church's social hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the charity of one's choice.
