Obituary

Margaret Addie Flanders Glynn died in her sleep on March 16, 2017. She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on December 16, 1927 and lived in the Portsmouth area all her life. Margaret worked most recently, until her retirement, as a Counselor for Virginia Dept. of Rehabilitative Services, finding jobs for her clients. She loved the yearly state conferences. Previous occupations included secretary at Churchland High School, Registrar at Frederick Military Academy, DMV, and in her earlier years was a Clinic assistant at the Infirmary of Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The first job was as a clerk in a dress shop on High Street while finishing secondary school at Mrs. Warren's School in Portsmouth. This began a lifelong passion with shopping and beautiful clothes.
She met and married her dear husband Francis Fitzgerald "Jerry" Glynn after a whirlwind romance at the end of WWII. Their daughter Maureen Christina "Chris" was born while Margaret was not yet 20. Their early years were spent in working during the day and enjoying Jerry's avocation as a trumpet player on the weekends. Theirs was a very musical household.
Margaret grew up enjoying long walks as a child in Prentis Park with her 4 sisters and maintained this love of enjoying walking in the neighborhoods of Olde Towne Portsmouth for many years. As a child, frequent travels to Georgia, her father's home, were a very special time. After a few years where Margaret and Jerry enjoyed the Ghent area of Norfolk and the social and cultural life there, her longest place of residence was One Crawford Parkway, #1207, where she enjoyed the views from her balcony and socializing with other residents.
Many of her friends were made at First Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Gleaners Sunday School class and Circle. After moving to Churchland, she attended Green Acres Presbyterian but loved walking to First Church in later years. Other affiliations include Junior Women's Club, Portsmouth Music Club, DAR, Fort Nelson Chapter, Portsmouth Historical Society, Friends of Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Garden Club. After retirement from VDRS, her great passion was to volunteer for 17 years for Red Cross at Portsmouth Regional Medical Center, where the children coming past the reception desk delighted her. Many yearly awards were given for her long hours there. She also volunteered at Portsmouth Visitor Center at Portside and Maryview Hospital. Hill House guide was also among her retirement activities. She was loved by her friends and family for her generosity and caring faithfulness.
Margaret loved her art classes and travels with Beazley Center friends and art classes elsewhere, producing many lovely watercolors and acrylics as a result. Outer Banks was also a favorite vacation spot for family gatherings. Spending time and traveling with her sisters and their families was also a highlight of her entire life.
She is survived by her best friend, daughter Maureen Christina "Chris" McKnight and husband Thomas McKnight, grandson Jonathan Claiborne Hamlet of Washington, D. C. and wife Rachel Sharrow, and sisters Madlyne Fullmer of Virginia Beach, VA and Mildred Garris of Davis, CA as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. The true light and joy of Margaret's life has been her grandson, Jonathan. His love and attention have inspired her through the last 36 years. She truly devoted her life to him and was thought of as a second mother.
She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Frances Fitzgerald "Jerry" Glynn and sisters Marion "Cindy" Wiggins and Merle Shepherd and her parents Louis M. Flanders and Addie P. Flanders.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Stanley Brittman for his excellent care and the staff at The Crossings, Suffolk, VA for their attention and caring.
