Obituary

CHESAPEAKE- Margaret Alease White Collmus, 88, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 15, 2018 in Yarmouth, Maine. She was born on March 22, 1930 in Dolphin, Virginia to William Hadder White and Sabrey Esther (Bright) White.

Margaret grew up in Bowers Hill, now part of Chesapeake, Virginia, on land owned by her family for generations. As a young girl she helped her mother by working in the family grocery store. Margaret graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth. She attended Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia where she developed lifelong friends. After graduation she worked as a Clerk Stenographer at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where she met her husband Bruce. They were married on August 4, 1951. Shortly thereafter they moved to Northern Virginia where she worked for the Naval Department, Bureau of Ships in Washington, DC.

In 1958 she took on her favorite role as a mother and homemaker, devoting her time and energies to raising her son David.

Margaret's faith was of great importance to her. She was a lifelong devoted member of the United Methodist Church with her hometown church, Indiana United Methodist Church, holding a special place in her heart. She continued to serve her faith when in 1967 she began her added role of working in her church library. This continued when, in 1977, she moved to Clearwater, Florida and was the church head librarian for Heritage United Methodist Church. She was a proud member of the Church and Synagogue Library Association, earning a special award for her work and dedication.

A lifelong Southerner, in 2006 Margaret bravely took the step to Maine to be near her son and his family, who will greatly miss her.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bruce Abel Collmus, her toddler son Bruce Abel Collmus, Jr., and her sister Myra Evelyn (White) Eaton. Margaret is survived by her son David, daughter-in-law Karen, and grandchildren Sarah and Christopher. She is also survived by her many nieces, nephews, and cousins and their families, who will greatly miss her.

Margaret's family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to the staff of Bay Square of Yarmouth (Maine) for their kindness and their care to Margaret.
