Lois Landrum Brantley passed away peacefully on January 23, 2015, her 90th birthday. Born Lois Gertrude Landrum on January 23, 1925 in Portsmouth, Ohio to Ethel Rooker Landrum and Della Raymond Landrum, she spent her childhood in Portsmouth, Ohio and Roanoke, Va. and moved to Portsmouth, Va. when she was 12 years old.
After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1941, she worked at The Famous, Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was a staff assistant for local newspapers, The Ledger Star and The Portsmouth Times. She wrote special feature stories on a wide variety of subjects of interest to women and the local community.
She retired from Portsmouth Public Schools in 1987 where she had spent nineteen years at Churchland High School as a substitute teacher, audiovisual librarian, and attendance clerk.
Lois was predeceased by her beloved husband of 68 years, J. Hunter Brantley, Jr., and their daughter, Debbie. Survivors include her daughter, Donna B. Saffold and her husband, Gordon; two granddaughters, Heather S. Jenkins and her husband, Mark, and Tiffany W. Saffold, as well as a great-granddaughter, Morgan W. Jenkins.
As a young mother Lois was active in the Portsmouth Jr. Woman's Club and PTA at her daughters' schools. Later her community involvement included serving as President of the Portsmouth General Hospital Auxiliary. As a board member of the Virginia Hospital Association and Eastern Virginia Health Systems Agency, she made major contributions in health care endeavors at both the local and state levels. She also served on the Portsmouth Schools Foundation Board, Portsmouth Electoral Board, and Portsmouth Sister City Commission. She volunteered at Portsmouth General Hospital, Maryview Medical Center, and was a docent and tour coordinator for Portsmouth Museums. As a Senior Partner and Advisory Board member, she enjoyed many trips with TowneBank. In 2004, Lois was honored as a recipient of the Girls Inc. Strong, Smart & Bold Award.
Lois was a beautiful lady inside and out, and always had her family first in her heart. She took great pride in her home in Pinehurst which she and Hunter built in 1952, raised their family and cherished their neighbors. Both well-respected Portsmouth citizens, they left a legacy of which they could be proud. They were fortunate to have had wonderful friends and a rich life filled with many rewarding opportunities and interesting experiences.
Lois was blessed to have had as her physician, Dr. Kevin Wilson. During the last three years of her life she was cared for in her home with dignity and respect by two wonderful staff members from Seniorcorp, Agnes Ofosu and Charlotte Hairston.
The family will receive friends at 4613 Wake Forest Road, the Brantley home, on Monday, January 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, at Centenary United Methodist Church, 3312 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth. The Rev. John W. Cole, II will officiate. Entombment will be private prior to the service. A reception will be held following the service in the church social hall.
