Kendall Anne Westbrook Rhodes, 69, passed away June 26, 2014.
She was the beloved wife for 47 years of Carl E. Rhodes, Jr., her high school sweetheart. She is the daughter of William Blount Westbrook, and the late Margaret Wiersdorf Westbrook.
Besides her husband and father, she is also survived by two sons, Major Carl E. "Trey" Rhodes III, U.S. Army (ret) and his wife, Theresa, and William Taylor Rhodes and his wife Kerri; four grandchildren, William Taylor, Jr., Carson Edward, Blair Elizabeth, and Lily Suzanne Rhodes; an aunt, Bettie Cole Orenduff Holland; two brothers-in-law, Scott Rhodes and his wife Amy, and Kent Rhodes and his wife Marsha; twelve first cousins, William Earl Froehlich, Beth Butler Gilliam, Lawrence Westbrook, Alison Johnson, Lilli-Jo Johnson Pritchard, Charles "Pepper" Westbrook, Richard Westbrook, Robert Westbrook, Bettie Ann Orenduff Johnson, Linwood Orenduff, Edward Orenduff, and Andrew Orenduff, their families, and a host of loving friends.
Kendall is a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She earned a Bachelor's Degree from Radford College and Master's Degree from Old Dominion University. She is a member of Alpha Sigma Tau national sorority. After teaching briefly in Portsmouth Public Schools, and in Tacoma, WA Public Schools, Kendall spent nine years as a stay-at-home mom. She volunteered at Portsmouth General Hospital for several years. She taught middle school language arts at Court Street Academy in Portsmouth and retired after 32 years. Kendall also served as the Faculty Coordinator for 30 years at the school, and co-sponsored the yearbook for over 25 years. Mrs. Rhodes tutored students privately in English and reading. She was a member of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, nominated by several former students.
She was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth, where she served as a deacon and an elder. She particularly loved the Welcome Ministry that she initiated.
Kendall served as President of the Virginia Federation of Republican Women from 2004-2006. She is a 30 plus year member of the Portsmouth Republican party, and has served as president of the Portsmouth Republican Women. She was a delegate to the National Republican Convention in 2004, held in New York City.
She is a sustaining member of the Portsmouth Service League.
Her family would like to express sincere appreciation to Dr. John R. Howard, for his tireless efforts and sincere caring for Kendall.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 7th from 10 a.m. to noon at First Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the church, immediately followed by a reception at the Ambassadors Club, 364 Peninsula Ave. at London Blvd. Burial will be private.
Charitable donations in Kendall's memory are requested to First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, 515 Court St., Portsmouth, VA. 23704. Foster Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
