PORTSMOUTH- John James "Jimmy" Horan, Jr., 73, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, John J. Horan, Sr. and Jessie Harrell Horan; Brenda York and Little Joe, wife and son of his younger brother Joseph; and Anthony Gaffos, husband of sister Barbara.
Left to cherish his memory are his younger siblings Joseph T. Horan (Pat), Barbara H. Gaffos, David L. "Larry" Horan, and Jacqueline H. Atkinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was a proud member of the U.S. Navy, which sparked his love of travel. After 32 years of dedicated service at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, he retired in December of 1997. Following retirement, he was a member of and served on the board of NARF. He was able to pursue his love of travel across the entire USA, less five states, with his CampClub buddies.
John was an active member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, Holy Angels Knights of Columbus Council 10766 and St. Paul's Assembly 1166. He was a volunteer and served on the board for Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless, Inc., and performed numerous tasks for Oasis Social Ministry, Inc.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 26, from 6:30 to 8:00p.m. at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High St., Portsmouth, VA. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11a.m. Wednesday, September 27 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 34 Afton Pkwy., Portsmouth. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, 4569 Shoulders Hill Rd., Suffolk. Afterwards, all are invited to return to the church social hall for a reception to honor John's memory.
