Obituary

PORTSMOUTH—John Hamilton Haynes, Jr., 63, passed away on Friday, March 26, 2021, after battling heart disease. He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Haynes, Sr. and Hattie W. Haynes.

John was born in Portsmouth on December 30, 1957. He graduated from Churchland High School, VCU in Richmond, and UVA with a MA in Anthropology. His interest in archeology, anthropology, and the environment led him to a variety of work experiences in these fields. He spent the latter of his career from 2011-2021 as an Archeologist and Tribal Liaison for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District. Prior to that, from 2004-2011, he was an Archeologist and Cultural Resource Manager for the Marine Corps Base Quantico.

John was the President and Principal Investigator for the Chesapeake Quaternary from 1992-2004. John spent much of his career conducting cultural resource assessments for some of the most challenging projects in the nation, including the Arlington National Cemetery Southern Expansion Project, the Norfolk Harbor Navigation Improvements Project, and the Norfolk Coastal Storm Risk Management Project. He also conducted cultural resource surveys, curated artifacts, and worked on the preservation of the historic Fort Norfolk.

John was well known for his witty banter and passion for local archeology at his work. His discussions on the rich history of our Hampton Roads Region and Native Cultures will not be forgotten. He will be greatly missed at the Norfolk District.

John will also be greatly missed by family members and friends at his social gatherings.

He is survived by two half-sisters, Margaret W. Davis, and Muriel H. Shumate; nieces Margaret Ferry (Tim), Elizabeth Davis, and Janet Riehl; nephew Robert Royster (Leigh Ann); cousin Victor "Skip" Young Haynes of the Outer Banks; and a host of extended family and friends.

John was happiest when he was fishing, or watching UVA sports and Washington Nationals Baseball, especially when they won the World Series in 2019! He loved nature and the ocean. A private memorial service will be held this summer on the Outer Banks. Trees can be planted in tribute to John. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
