John Robert
"Bob" Krezel
May 25, 1945 — Apr 26, 2023
Moseley
Bob Krezel, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away at the age of 77 on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, in his home in Moseley, Virginia. Bob was born in Norfolk County on May 25, 1945, to the late Julius John Krezel and Frances Harvey Krezel.
After graduating from St. Paul's Catholic High School, Bob attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a bachelor's degree in physics; he later obtained a master's degree in engineering mechanics from Old Dominion University. His long and distinguished career as a physicist at Naval Surface Warfare Center Underwater Explosions Research Department (UERD) spanned from his work as a co-op student in 1964 until his retirement in 2000.
Bob's work extended to the international community where he served as the U.S. Navy representative for joint test programs in the United Kingdom and Japan. He was also an instructor at the Naval Postgraduate School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as part of the Professional Summer Series, and the Fleet and Mine Warfare Training Center. He continued to make significant contributions to the shock and vibration community, working for more than 15 years after his retirement. As a result, he was honored with the Meritorious Civilian Service Award and awarded the Shock and Vibration Exchange Lifetime Achievement Award. Bob truly loved his work and the people he worked with throughout his career.
Above all else, Bob was a devoted family man. He loved his wife and children beyond measure. And he could not have been more proud of his children and grandchildren. He had a passion for adventure, which passed on to his children. He enjoyed having spirited conversations with family and friends, never passing up the opportunity to tell a good story. Bob loved to read, sail, ski, bicycle, play baseball and basketball, travel, fly kites, play word games with his wife, dance, and listen to all genres of music.
Bob was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Church of the Resurrection, and St. Gabriel's Catholic Church. He was a proud, lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his loving wife, Frances Blasio Krezel; two children: Lori Krezel Collins and Brian Krezel (Colleen); three beautiful grandchildren: Gwendolyn, Caroline, and Brendan Krezel; a brother, Patrick Krezel (Frances); two sisters- and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews; and two grand-dogs he loved dearly.
Bob will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues, but his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched. He will continue to inspire those who knew him.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 15, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 522 High Street, Portsmouth. Interment will take place at All Saints Catholic Cemetery. A reception at Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS.org) or the Alzheimer's Association (ALZ.org). Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
