Obituary

JoAnn Faircloth, age 80 of Portsmouth, Virginia passed away unexpectedly in a Portsmouth hospital on April 7, 2023.  JoAnn was born in Portsmouth, Va. On October 14, 1942, to William Lawrence Faircloth and Jean Sophie Cassell Faircloth.

She was predeceased by her brother, Edward Lawrence Faircloth of Clairton, Pa., and her sister, Linda E. Malek of Gaithersburg, Md.

Surviving is her sister, Eleanor Jean Daughtrey of Kingsland, Ga., two brothers, Raymond G. Faircloth and Gerald J. Bright, both of Suffolk, Va., and many nephews, and nieces.

During JoAnn's adulthood she worked in a religious bookstore in Silver Springs, Maryland, the Great Atlantic Management Co., Cherokee Apartments in Portsmouth, VA. and she was a Caretaker for the elderly in the tidewater area.

JoAnn was a longtime active member of First Friends Church in Portsmouth, Va.  Over the past thirty plus years she has served on numerous church committees.  I recall her talking fondly of the summers when she would serve as a Senior at the summer camp for children.  She also enjoyed bible classes and helping in the children's nursery during Sunday services.  I am very appreciative of the love and fellowship that the Pastors and parishioners of First Friends Church have shown to our dear sister.  Thank you all.

Another passion for JoAnn was Country Music.  She loved to dance and continued to do so weekly up into her seventies.  Nothing pleased her more than going to a venue that had a live country band.   JoAnn never married and you may be thinking that she didn't have any suitors, but you would be wrong.  She was engaged to be married four (4) times!  The last engagement was just a few years ago.  I guess she had to keep a dancing partner.

JoAnn never learned to drive so she had to either walk, take a bus, or have a friend take her where she needed to go.  If you lived in Portsmouth, chances are that you have probably seen JoAnn walking happily along the city sidewalks.  She loved to get outside.  Couldn't stand to be shut indoors for too long.

I would like to personally thank all of you who knew and loved JoAnn.  But the list would be endless and unfortunately,  many of you I do not know.  I do want to acknowledge one couple that JoAnn talked about frequently.  She told me that she had known them for many years and that she dearly loved them.  They are Mr. and Mrs. Betty and Roy Bruntmyer.  Thank you,  JoAnn was blessed to have you as such a good and dear friend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Oasis Social Ministry, 800 A Williamsburg Ave, Portsmouth, Va. 23704.  Phone # (757)397-6060. Or a charity of your choice.
