Obituary

PORTSMOUTH- Jean Taylor Gribok, 70, died May 9, 2018.

Born in Portsmouth to the late Lloyd E. Taylor and Jean Taylor Hamaker, she resided in Kill Devil Hills in the 80s, working in property management and banking. In 1989 she moved to Oriental, NC, where she developed a business plan, established, owned, and managed a favorite local restaurant, Scoot's Pizza.

An avid reader, her Kindle was her best friend. A self-professed Luddite, she had a masterful vocabulary and prided herself as a grammarian. Jeanie returned to Portsmouth in 1995 and worked as a loan officer until she retired. She enjoyed herb gardening, cooking, sketching, swimming, entertaining, and visiting with family and friends. She loved playing Bridge weekly from age sixteen with her group of best friends. Passionate to her causes, Jeanie fought cancer three times, beating it twice. Her unexpected passing has left a void in our family indescribable by words.

In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by her brother, Lloyd Eric Taylor. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Denis Gribok; her sister, Janie Taylor Head; her children, Frank Elwood Halstead (Maria), Laura Medlin White (Nick), and Paul Gribok; her sister-in-law, Brenda Jobst (Dan); her niece, Erica Taylor Ewoldt; grandchildren Frank Halstead, Jr. (Linda), Audrey Chapman (Sam), Kathryn Halstead, Eleni White, Yianni White; and great-grandchildren Ofelia Halstead, Olivia Halstead, and James "Sammy" Chapman, III.

A memorial service will be held 12:00 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at Baker-Foster Funeral Home, 5685 Lee Farm Ln., Suffolk. A celebratory reception will immediately follow at Denis and Jean's home. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Her Foundation, P.O. Box 2187, Portsmouth, VA 23702.
