SUFFOLK—On July 17, 2025, Janine Upton Garrett crossed over to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Janine was a resident of Suffolk, Virginia for 41 years. She was a parishioner of The Church of The Resurrection Catholic Church in Portsmouth. For many years she acted as PTA president at Oakland Elementary School. Janine was an active mother in Boy Scouts of America and also assisted the Knights of Columbus over many years.
Janine enjoyed gardening outside and working in her rose garden. She was a caring person who always put others in front of her wellbeing and never expected anything in return. She enjoyed cooking for special family gatherings. Her favorite hobby was spending time with her three grandchildren. Janine had an Irish Setter that provided her great joy and happiness. She greatly enjoyed her Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise vacations with her family. She had an inner strength that provided comfort to all she encountered.
Janine was preceded in death by her parents, James and Marilyn Upton; her in-laws Braxton and Vivian Garrett, sister-in-law Debra Williams, brothers-in-law Earl Williams and Leonard Johnston; two children lost in pregnancy; and beloved yorkie Miley. She is survived by her husband of fifty years, Denis; three sons: Cole (Karyn), Justin (Courtney), and Kyle; three grandchildren: Connor, Jacin, and Vivian, who brought her great joy; and her siblings: Darlene Fields and husband Larry, Carolyn Upton, Duane Upton, and Jimmy Upton and his wife Ann; as well as 14 nieces and nephews, and 29 great-nieces and nephews.
Janine lived her life as a true Catholic Christian following the teachings of Holy Mother Church. She will never be forgotten and will always be remembered as the person she was.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High St., Portsmouth, with the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Ln., Portsmouth. Entombment at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Suffolk will follow. Donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital . Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
