Janie Lynn Istre, 63, passed away Feb. 7, 2014, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Istre was born in Neptune, N.J., the daughter of the late LCDR Earl R. Schattenberg and the late Patricia A. Schattenberg. She was a veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert M. Schattenberg, Sr.

Survivors include her husband of 37 years, James Istre, Sr.; two sons, James Istre, Jr. (Kathie), and Jaque Istre; one daughter, Jenetta Sykes (Teddy); 12 grandchildren; a sister, Paula Southerland; and three brothers, Earl (Connie), Mark (Eva), and Eric Schattenberg; and a host of nieces, nephews, and longtime friends.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Church of Saint Therese, 4137 Portsmouth Boulevard, Chesapeake. The service will be officiated by Father Kevin J. O'Brien. Burial, with military honors, will be at 9 a.m. Friday in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veterans Cemetery. Condolences may be registered at bwfosterfuneralhome.com
