Obituary

Janet Grimes Lunde, 86, daughter of Robert B. Grimes and Hazel Vance Grimes of Portsmouth, VA, left this earthly world on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019.  She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Lunde; her brother, David Vance Grimes; her sister, Margaret Dehler; and her first grandson, Scott Lunde. She is survived by her three children, Carl "Danny" Lunde and his wife, Bobbie; Linda Rader and her husband, Barry; and Evelyn Zirkle and her husband, Keith; and six grandchildren, Wayne and Nathan Lunde, Holly and Paul Rader, and Keith and Ty Zirkle. She also leaves behind many great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.  She emotionally adopted many other children too numerous to name. She lovingly mothered all open to her kindness and caring.

Janet attended Atlantic Christian College for a year and received a two-year business degree in conjunction with high school credits. When her children were young, she worked as a substitute teacher. Later, she was an administrative assistant for the Tiger Team at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and at the Norfolk Naval Base until she retired from civil service in 1994 after 23 years. Janet was a leader in Toast Mistresses. She usually became the chair of any committee she was involved with.  She taught children's Sunday School and VBS and was an active member of her church when younger.  Janet was a master seamstress who could upholster furniture, tailor clothing, and make custom garden flags. In the 1960s, she designed and sewed costumes for the Norfolk ballet. She was selected as a Lake Taylor calendar lady because of her interesting life.  In last few years, Janet excelled as an artist, painting from her hospital bed on an adapted easel built by her son. Her painting class at Marian Manor sustained her and brought her joy.

The family extends their great appreciation to Marian Manor and their art class. In addition, they give great thanks to Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital Dogwood Unit for many years of tender nursing care and support by the recreational staff.

Janet was a believer in Jesus and the life everlasting. Her happy spirit and loving heart continue to blossom as her youth and health are restored in her heavenly body.
