Obituary

PORTSMOUTH--Dr. James "Jim" Vincent Scutero of Portsmouth, VA passed away on January 28, 2021 at the age of 82. Jim was born in New York City and spent his youth in the Bronx surrounded by his extended loving family, including over 50 cousins, aunts, and uncles. He was proud of his Italian heritage defined by lots of family, love, laughter, and great food.

Jim was known by family and friends for his sense of humor, intellect, and compassion for others. He loved baseball (especially his Mets), reading books, researching stocks, playing cards, and, in his younger days, playing golf and traveling to Europe (especially Italy). But most of all, he enjoyed being surrounded by his loving family.

After graduating from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, Jim received a pharmacy degree from Fordham University; he ultimately obtained his medical degree from Creighton University, certified in both pulmonary and internal medicine. He would always say "not too bad for a kid from the Bronx."

Upon graduating from medical school, Jim joined the US Navy as a doctor; he served for 13 years, rising to the rank of commander. In 1970, this service took him to Portsmouth, which became his home for the remainder of his life.

As a pulmonologist he was significantly involved at both Portsmouth General and Maryview Hospitals. He was past president of Portsmouth Academy of Medicine and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Lung Association. Throughout the community, Jim was always known for his care and compassion for all his patients and his dedication to their wellbeing.

Jim's other local affiliations and memberships included the Rotary Club of Portsmouth, The Portsmouth Assembly, and the Town Point Club.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Violet; daughters Lynn (Rocky) Adornato, Lori (Lucius) Breeden, and Violet (Bertsch) Cox; and seven grandchildren--Gessica, Alissa, Emily, Gates, Rocco, Courts, and James.

A virtual mass in celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Please email scuterofamily@gmail.com for a link to attend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jim's name can be made to the American Lung Association. (P.O.Box 756 Osceola, Wisconsin 54020 or www.lung.org)  Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
