James Edward Cary III, 56, the son of Ernestine Martin Cary of Portsmouth and the late James Edward Cary Jr., died Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, after a lengthy battle with kidney disease.
He was born April 29, 1962, at Camp Lejeune, N.C., where his father, a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman, was stationed. Jim lived in Portsmouth for the past 51 years and had been a member of Park View Baptist Church.
Jim was a 1980 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was a varsity football player for three seasons. He played on both the offensive and defensive lines for the Presidents.
Jim was named to the All-Southeastern District team as a senior. He earned a scholarship to play offensive tackle at East Carolina University.
He was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2013 and was placed on the national kidney transplant list. Before his illness, he owned and operated Jim's Windows and Trim, a home-improvement business in Portsmouth.
Jim's father died in 1979.
In addition to his mother, survivors include two sisters, Cynthia Cary Anderson and her husband, Brice T. Anderson, of Portsmouth; and Kelly Cary Jobst and her husband, William E. Jobst, of Portsmouth; a nephew, James B. Anderson, his wife, Lauren Conners Anderson, and their daughters, Miller Walke Anderson and Bridget Kathryn Anderson, of Portsmouth; and a niece, Ryan Cary Metz and her husband, Trevor Metz, of Chesapeake.
Other survivors include a step-niece, Kimberly J. Damron and her daughter, Brandy Alexis Storms, of Hampton; a step-nephew, William E. Jobst Jr., his wife, Golden J. Jobst, and their son, Austin Chase Jobst, of Hampton; and two brothers whom Jim considered to be his sons, Benjamin Britt of Roanoke and Jarrod Britt of Portsmouth.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home of Jim's sister Cindi, at 2408 Crocker Ave. in Portsmouth. Dress is casual. Please come ready to share your favorite memories of Jim.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Donate Life Virginia, 9200 Arboretum Parkway, Suite 104, North Chesterfield, VA 23236, ATTN: Jim Cary Memorial Fund.
