Obituary

Jack M. Rattigan of Portsmouth, VA, age 94, died at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital on December 25, 2022.  He was a native of Shenandoah, PA.  His parents, Martin and Philomena (Monahan) Rattigan, preceded him in death, as did his sisters Mary Rattigan and Ann Coyle.  When Jack was orphaned at an early age, he was raised by his loving uncle, Dr. James J. Monahan, and three caring aunts: Mary Rattigan, Mame and Anna Monahan.

He is survived by his wife, Adelaide (O'Hare), the love of his life for 67 years.  He often said his life began the day he married Adelaide.  They were blessed with six children:  Martin, Portsmouth, VA; Neil, Cherry Hill, NJ; Brendan, Portsmouth, VA and son Jack (Shayla), Lexington, VA; Maria Lawson and sons Matthew (Danielle) of Pensacola, FL and Charlie, Portsmouth, VA; Adelaide (Steve) Biegun and their children Joseph, Sam, Cate, and Adelaide Rose, Alexandria, VA; and Jacqueline (Richard) Maume and their children Margaret, Bess and Henry, Toledo, OH.

Jack's greatest moments were being able to share time and stories with his family.  He really enjoyed family gatherings surrounded by loved ones and seeing them enjoying each other.

Jack graduated from The College of Holy Cross (class of 1950), Worcester, MA where he was part of the student group that started the college radio station, WCHC.  Weeks after the Korean War started, Jack enlisted in the USAF.  Months later, he received a direct commission as a 2nd LT.  He served in Germany as Group Adjutant of the 86th Medical Group, part of the 86th Fighter Bomber Wing.  After he was released from active duty as a 1st LT, he joined WGLV-TV, Lehigh Valley, PA where he hosted a talk show, children's program and became a news anchor and news director.  In 1958, he was hired by NBC, Philadelphia as an afternoon personality and newsman. When the station was sold to Westinghouse Broadcasting, Jack was part of the team that began the pioneer All News Station, KYW.

In 1967, he joined WMMR-FM, where he became sales manager.  In 1971, he and his family moved to Norfolk, VA to manage WKLX.  He later worked in sales at WFOG.  In 1974, Rollins Broadcasting hired him to manage WCHS/WBES, Charleston, WV.  A few years later, Rollins transferred Jack back to Norfolk as WRAP general manager.  In 1982, he became the general manager of WNOR FM/AM and in 1985 was a founder in Saga Communications which purchased WNOR and other radio stations.   When the children had completed their education, he and Adelaide established Rattigan Resources, a management consulting and sales training company.  In addition, Jack was listed in the American Advertising Federation's Speaker Directory and traveled the country speaking to Advertising Federations, Chambers of Commerce, retail groups and other marketing organizations.  His articles were featured in various national publications.  Jack received numerous awards and honors from organizations locally and across the country.

An active member of Sacred Heart Parish and Church of the Resurrection, he was devotedly involved in Pro-Life activities locally, statewide, and nationally.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday, January 2, at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High St., Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, at Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Ln., Portsmouth.
