I. Curtis
Jernigan
Sep 12, 1943 — May 6, 2021
Virginia Beach
I. Curtis Jernigan, formerly of Washington D.C. and Arlington VA, passed away peacefully in Virginia Beach on May 6, 2021. He was born in Portsmouth VA on September 12, 1943 to I. Curtis Jernigan and Clara Maupin MacKenzie Jernigan.
Curtis graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond VA and Washington and Lee University, where he played football and was recruited from the football team to play lacrosse. He was fond of saying that the first lacrosse game he ever saw was one he played in. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi.
He received a master's degree in Economics from the University of Indiana and a law degree from the George Washington School of Law. Curtis had a distinguished career for many years in the Economic Analysis Group of the Antitrust Division, U.S. Justice Department. Upon retirement, he joined Economists Inc. in Washington D.C. as a consultant and expert witness in antitrust matters.
Curtis enjoyed skiing in his younger years as well as golf and travel. Some of his favorite memories were of summers at 80 th Street in Virginia Beach, ski trips to Utah, golf trips to Scotland and West Virginia with his DOJ buddies and Christmas Eve costume parties in Virginia Beach. In later years, he loved cooking, even presenting family members with a cookbook of his favorite recipes.
As Curtis's health declined, he moved to First Colonial Inn in Virginia Beach to be closer to family. We are very grateful to the staff at FCI for their care and friendship. We are also very grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff at Sentara Hospice House for the comfort and care they gave to Curtis and his family during his final days.
Curtis is survived by his sister, Marcy J. Sims (Hunter) of Virginia Beach; a nephew, Hunter Sims III (Laura) of San Francisco; and a niece, Clara Sims Mulligan (Patrick) of London. He is also survived by three grandnieces and one grandnephew, whom he adored: Rhett and Willie Sims and Theo and Madalou Mulligan, as well as a myriad of cousins in the extended MacKenzie clan.
As Curtis requested, there will be no funeral. Burial will be private in the family gravesite in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth, VA and a celebration of his life will be held this summer. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
