Herbert Joerg Matheis, 63, passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2014. Born in Berlin, Germany, Herb came to this country as a young man along with his sister and mother. He attended West Forsythe High School in Winston Salem, North Carolina and went on to join the Navy assigned to Fighter Squadron Eleven at Oceana Naval Air Station. Afterwards, he settled in the area and worked in the construction and plumbing field. In the late 80's he and his wife moved to Portsmouth, Virginia and made it their home where they formed what would be the 1st of 2 title insurance agencies. For his contribution to the agency, Herb learned to examine real estate documents and perform searches under the guidance of other experts in this field and excelled in this line of work for many years up until the time of his death. His current agency, Atlantic Coast Title & Escrow LLC was formed in 2002. Herb had many interests during his lifetime, and enjoyed, when weather permitted, riding his Harley to the many Circuit Courts around the area, sailing with his good friend Tom Edwards, enjoying summers at Sandbridge, vacationing on the beautiful Island of Kauai with his wife, playing poker with his buddies in the WTF Poker Club and enjoying being a grandfather. He was also instrumental in his early years in Portsmouth in the formation of the West Park View Night Watch and loved the Portsmouth community.

Herb is survived by his loving wife and partner, Cathy Matheis, sister and brother in law, Brigitte and Pat Wall, daughters, Amber Keddrell and Amanda Matheis, son in law, Steve Keddrell, sisters in law, Marion Lisenby, Virginia Lisenby and Jane Seymour (Wayne), aunt and uncle, Tanta Hilda and Uncle Charlie, nephew and niece, Jonathan and Eileen Norwood, niece, Michelle Turney, grandchildren Shey Keddrell and Oliviana Keddrell and his special grandson Joshua Lewis who loved his opa more than words can express.

A memorial service to celebrate Herb's life will be held on Friday, November 14, 2014 at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High Street, Portsmouth, VA at 6:00 pm. The family will receive friends immediately following at the residence at 4409 Duke Drive, Portsmouth, VA. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you offer a donation to the charity of your choice in Herb's name.
