Obituary

SUFFOLK—Helene Dragon Zaepfel, 94, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2024, surrounded by her family.  She was born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Charles and Helene Wiczkowski Dragon.  Her father moved the family to the Portsmouth, VA area during World War II, where she lived the rest of her life.

She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in 1945 and St. Joseph's College in Emmitsburg Maryland in 1949.   She was later editor of the College Newsletter and served as her Class Secretary.  Gifted with a beautiful voice, Helene sang on local radio early in her adult life.  And, as a longtime member of St. Paul Catholic Church, she sang in the choir and as a soloist at many weddings.  Helene was active in many professional and community organizations.  Helene's career was in Personnel Services and Human Resources and she retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1990.  In addition to many honors and awards, she was a recipient of the Meritorious Civilian Service Award.

Helene loved being with family, entertaining friends and welcoming visitors.  One of her favorite family events was hosting an annual Christmas Cookie Bake in her home for over 60 years.  She was an avid reader, loved the challenge of a good Scrabble game especially when she won, and had room in her heart for many pets during her life.  Helene took pride in her home and yard and could be frequently found relaxing on her back porch.  She was strong in her Faith and opinions and didn't mind sharing both with others.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Cletus P. Zaepfel, son, Stephen A., sisters Claire Dragon Hesling and Constance Dragon.  She is survived by her children: Helene Z. McGann (Stephen), Charles B. Zaepfel (Mary), Richard P. Zaepfel, and Mark J. Zaepfel (Julie); eleven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
