Hazel Elizabeth Rees Johansen, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on October 25, 2015.
Mrs. Johansen was born in South Carolina and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. She was the widow of Rear Admiral Julian E. "Joe" Johansen, U.S. Coast Guard, retired, since his death in 1998. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and served as First Lady of Portsmouth while her husband was mayor from 1980 to 1984.
Survivors include three children, Linda J. Edgar and husband Bryan Edgar of Seattle, Wash., Bruce E. Johansen and wife Patricia E. Keiffer of Omaha, Neb., and Andrew E. Johansen and wife Gwendolyn of Chambersburg, Penn. Also surviving are three grandchildren, David Edgar and wife Judy, Valerie L. Foytik and husband Peter, Emily B. Johansen; four great-grandchildren, Annalise, Tatum, Eve, and soon to arrive, Abel; and a sister, Majel Barrett.
A funeral service will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015 by Pastor John W. Cole, II. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
