PORTSMOUTH - Gualtiero (Walter) Cavalieri, beloved husband of Rita Sue Landerman Cavalieri, passed away at home on August 9, 2017 in Portsmouth, Virginia.
He was born in Milano, Italy on October 15, 1930, son of the late Raffaele Giovani and Maria Magdalena Cavalieri. Predeceased by Maria Balzano Cavalieri, mother of their/his children, a son, Raffaele Cavalieri (wife-Fulvia); a granddaughter, Trina Landerman
Survivors include his wife; Rita Sue Landerman Cavalieri; son, Gianluca Cavalieri (wife-Enrica); a sister, Loredona Cavalieri; grandchildren, Valeria Valcada, Ginger Bowman, Alexandra Hodges and Catherine Gibbs; and many nieces and nephews.
Walter was schooled in Milano, Italy at the Brera Institute of Fine Arts. He was employed for 35 years and retired from Bank National of Labor in Genoa, Italy.
Member of The Italian Boxing Federation, International Boxing Federation, USBA, and United States Amateur Boxing Assoc. as a judge and referee in over 40 professional bouts and 100s of regular fights in Germany, Italy, Scotland, England, France and the United States
Later in life, through his love and romance for music, Walter became a singer and songwriter and enjoyed singing in nightclubs, conventions, Italian Festivals in cities such as Portofino, Italy; Genova, Italy; Miami, Florida; Providence, Rhode Island; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Portsmouth, Richmond, Norfolk, Williamsburg, Newport News, Virginia; and Atlanta, Georgia.
Walter enjoyed singing with Pat Curtis Big Band and recording with Tommy Newsom, Sonny Morgan, John Toomey, and the thrill of recording with Frank Tiberia, the director of the Woody Herman Orchestra. Walter and his wife enjoyed vacationing and touring in Italy, mountain hiking in the Alps, Cultural Tours of Sicily, Roma, Naples, Capri and Positono, Venice and Lake Como area.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 18th at St. Paul Catholic Church, 522 High Street Portsmouth, Virginia. The family is so grateful for the Angels of Hospice.
