On March 3, 2015, Grace Hargrave Cox departed this life surrounded by her loving family. Grace was born on September 14, 1925 to Commodore William Walter Hargrave and Harriett Hargrave. She was the wife of Dr. Harry D. Cox for 64 years until his death in 2012.
Grace was born in New York City while her father, a physician in the Navy, was stationed there. As a Navy junior, she lived in many places on the East Coast, including Washington, D.C., Great Lakes, Philadelphia, Pensacola, and Annapolis, as well as in Samoa and the Philippine Islands. She graduated with a degree in clothing and textiles from the University of Alabama, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. After graduation, she moved to Portsmouth, where her father was Commanding Officer of the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. It was at that time she met Harry – the love of her life.
Grace loved sports. She grew up playing golf and tennis and continued to play into her late 70's. She enjoyed sewing, reading, bridge and mahjong. She taught Sunday school at both Trinity and St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, where she also served on the Altar Guild for many years. Grace was a member of the Portsmouth Service League, Junior Woman's Club, Portsmouth General Hospital Auxiliary, Portsmouth Academy of Medicine Auxiliary, and the Colonial Dames of America.
Grace was predeceased by her sister, Bettie Gannon. She is survived by two brothers, Capt. William W. Hargrave, U.S.N. (Ret)(Cheron) of Annapolis, and Louis W. Hargrave (Sandy) of Baltimore, and a sister-in-law, Betty Cox Scott (John) of Charlottesville; as well as four children: Russell Cox (Linda), Ginny Arnette (Bob), Bill Cox (Myra), and Miriam Fedro (Randy). Her legacy includes eight grandchildren: Cathy Sheffield, Beth Arnette, David Arnette, Craig Fedro, Paige Fedro, Justin Cox, Matt Cox, and Laura Cox; and four great-grandchildren: Tristan and Shannon Cox, and Lexi and Reagan Sheffield.
