Obituary

Gloria Mercer Creecy passed away peacefully at home on the morning of July 22, 2026, following a short illness. Gloria was born March 2, 1938 in the District of Columbia to the late William Shepard Mercer and Nellie Lewis Mercer.

A lifelong resident of Portsmouth and Chesapeake, and a proud graduate of the Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1956, Gloria was generous with her time and talent. Serving on boards and volunteering, she supported many local organizations, including Maryview Foundation, Girls Inc., Southeast Virginia Community Foundation, ODU Athletic Foundation, Elizabeth River Project, and Edmarc Hospice for Children, among others. The Portsmouth Service League (active for over 85 years) in 2012 selected Gloria and husband Carroll as the first couple to receive the honor of Portsmouth First Citizen for their outstanding contributions to the community.

Gloria is preceded in death by her daughters, Robin A. Breslauer and Kelly Creecy Cullifer; sister June Mercer Baker; and brothers-in-law Mahlon B. Parker and Douglas Baker. She is survived by her husband William Carroll Creecy; son P. Clinton White, Jr. and his wife Mary Bradford; sister Fay Mercer Parker; son-in-law D. Michael Breslauer; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and treasured friends. Gloria will be deeply missed by all who met her.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Dana Buchanan, MD, and Westminster Canterbury Hospice for their care and compassion.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 31, at Foster Funeral Home, 1926 High St., Portsmouth. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 1, at Green Acres Presbyterian Church, 3135 Hanley Ave., Portsmouth. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
