Gladys Robinson
Horne
Apr 8, 1937 — May 11, 2026
Chesapeake
Gladys Robinson Horne, 89, passed from this life into the presence of our Lord on May 11, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. Relieved of her earthly struggles, Gladys received the peace given only by God, and her family and friends are thankful to our Lord and Savior for her gentle release.
Gladys was born and raised in Portsmouth, VA, the middle of seven children of Charlie and Eileen Robinson. A graduate of St. Paul's Catholic High School, Class of 1955, Gladys excelled socially, scholastically, and athletically, including being a member of the All-State Girl's Basketball Team. At St. Paul's, Gladys met the love of her life, Daniel F. Horne, Jr. and established many amazing, lifelong friendships! After high school, Gladys worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the Supply Department and had the honor of being crowned "The Queen of The Oyster Bowl" in 1957 when Navy defeated Georgia 27-14.
In 1958, Gladys and Dan Horne married and set up their family home in Chesapeake, VA for 55 years. They raised 5 children and ran several businesses together, employing numerous family and friends, until Dan's passing in 2013. In addition to Gladys's smarts for business and finance, Gladys was a voracious reader, an avid gardener, and a highly competitive card player. Gladys also enjoyed decorating her home, especially for Christmas and hosting her annual "Girlfriends Christmas Gathering" for over 4 decades!
Gladys was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Daniel F. Horne, Jr., as well as her parents, Charlie and Eileen Robinson, and her twin brother and sister, Jack Robinson and Jill Coyle.
Gladys is survived by 4 sisters: June Charlton, Nellie Brice, Wilma Spady and Ginny Robinson; sisters-in-law Carol Robinson, and Sheilah Horne (Dave) of Delray Beach, FL; 5 children: Daniel F. Horne III of Chesapeake, VA, Dr. Patti Hastings (Mark) of Chesterfield, VA, Laura Garegnani (Jim) of San Diego, CA, Sharon Horne of Youngsville, NC, and Eric Horne (JoAnne) of Roanoke, VA; 12 grandchildren: Daniel F. Horne, IV, Matthew Horne (Chelsea), Lindsay Horne (and their mother Diane Carney), Dr. Erin Sturgis (Charles), Megan Adkins (Doug), Dustin Degnan (Kerry), Kristin Degnan, Michael Garegnani (Diana), James Garegnani, Taylor Horne; Kyle Horne and Ryan Horne (Allison); 9 beautiful great-grandchildren: Phoenix Sturgis, Henley Adkins, Landon (Ellie) and Peyton (Lou Lou) Degnan, Rylan and Sheppard Horne, Roman Garegnani, and Malakai (Kai) and Lennon Horne; and nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.
Gladys and Dan were blessed with generations of loving family and the most loyal, lifelong friends. Their commitment to their beloved family and friends was constant and total; the family's gratitude cannot be overexpressed.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2026, at Church of St. Therese, 4137 Portsmouth Blvd., Chesapeake, by Fr. Rolo Castillo, assisted by Deacon Bubba Allen. The family will receive friends for the hour preceding the funeral, and a reception in the fellowship hall will immediately follow the Mass.
After the church reception, a brief graveside interment of cremains will be held at Olive Branch cemetery with Deacon Bubba Allen presiding.
The family wishes to acknowledge with appreciation the care Gladys received from Commonwealth Senior Living at Churchland House, including Trinity Hospice, as well as Harmony at Harbour View. Very special thanks are offered to independent care provider, Allison (Allie) Nairn, whose tender, loving care accompanied Gladys from 2025 onward until her transition into heaven.
Donations may be made in memory of Gladys R. Horne to Trinity Hospice, 860 Greenbrier Circle, Suite 103, Chesapeake, VA, 23320. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
