George T. Varney, Sr., 94, of Ravenswood, WV went to be with the Lord on Nov. 5, 2015.
He was born on October 27, 1921 in Williamson, WV, son of the late Leonard J. and Emma Lou Hughes Varney. He was a World War II Army veteran. He worked 19 years for the N&W Railroad before moving his family to Portsmouth, VA where he retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Shop 41.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Taylor Bartram Varney of Ravenswood, WV; children, George T. Varney, Jr. (Pat), Emma Lou Truitt, Priscilla Short (Mike), and Bootsy Moore; grandchildren, Courtenay Werner and Ashley Vaughn; five great-grandchildren; and his loving stepchildren, Linda Siders (Paul), Leslie Henry (George), Vickie Herdman (Eddie) and Cathy Easter (Roy). He is also survived by several step-grandchildren. He was truly loved by all. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Wooten Varney; daughter, Conna Virginia Varney; stepdaughter, Tammy Beaver; brother, Jimmy Varney; and sisters, Mildred Copley, Bethel Hatfield, and Emma Joyce Varney.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015 at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
