Dr Francis J Stenicka
Portsmouth - Frank was born in Dublin, September 14th. 1927. He was predeceased by his parents Francis R. and Beatrice Stenicka, and his younger sister Patricia. He died May 7th, just before the running of the Kentucky Derby!
He received his early education from the Christian Brothers' school, Synge Street, Dublin, and at the Cistercian College, Roscrea, Co.Tipperary. In October 1944 he entered Medical School at U.C.D., graduating Dec. 1951. He served in the Irish Army Medical Corps 1944-1945 and received an honorary discharge when the unit was disbanded. He interned at Mater Infirmorum Hospital, Belfast, Co. Antrim, and followed this with service in the Merchant Navy as a ship's surgeon from 1954-56.
Shortly after marrying Kathleen in 1956, they emigrated to Placentia, Newfoundland, Canada, where he served as Assistant Medical Officer for two years, before travelling out west to Athabasca, Alberta with their young son, John Francis. Not one to relish winter weather at zero and below, the young family travelled south to Calgary, and soon settled into the busy life of a Family Physician. Simultaneously, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force Auxiliary from 1959 to 1962. Two sons were born to them in Calgary, James and Lawrence.
Early in the 1970 's Frank, tired of the long winters with heavy snow in Calgary. By 1974 he completed a residency program at Portsmouth General Hospital, He became an E.R. physician at Maryview Medical Center until 1978 when he established an office devoted to Family Practice. These were very happy years.
Semi retirement followed in 2002, the office closed but Frank continued with Locum Tenens assignments until December 2013, when he finally retired.
Frank died in his sleep on May 7th in Pensacola FL He is survived by his ever loving wife of almost 60 years, Kathleen, his three sons John, (Karen) in Pensacola Fl., Jimmy, and Larry (Elaine) of California, grandchildren Nicholas, Christopher and Natasha. Memorial service to be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday May 27, 2016 in Conference Room B, at Maryview Medical Center, 3636 High Street, Portsmouth, VA
