Obituary

Frances Emma Appelman Shine, 96, died August 1, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born July 13, 1919 in Chesterfield, VA, the daughter of the late John B. Appelman and Margaretta Schmittlein Appelman. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, John F. Shine; three brothers, Emil, Carl, George; and two sisters, Margaret B. Appelman and Eleanora A. Clark.
Frances was a kind and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She spent much time volunteering at Maryview Hospital in Portsmouth, as an active member of the Women's Auxiliary and Handcraft Group, crocheting caps for newborn babies, balls for hospitalized children and making gowns for the stillborn babies. She was an active member of the PTA of Portsmouth Catholic High School where she helped to raise money by baking and selling eclairs.
She is survived by her brother, John Appelman, age 101; devoted son, John Shine, Jr. (Cynde Sisson); daughter, Beth Fulcher (Ron); daughter, Margaret Magee (Tim); granddaughters, Christine Fulcher and Elizabeth Magee; and numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks to her compassionate care-givers, Theresa Akbar, Linda Collins and Debra Boyd; and Intrepid Hospice.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2015 in St. Paul's Catholic Church by Monsignor Fred Elkin. Burial will follow in All Saints Catholic Cemetery. A Christian Wake Service will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at 7 p.m. at Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennett's Creek Chapel, where the family will receive friends until 8:30 pm. Memorial donations may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 1503 Michaels Rd., Henrico, VA 23229; or to a charity of choice. Condolences may be registered at BakerFoster.com.
