Evelyn V. Baker was called to be with the Lord on September 30, 2015, after a short battle with leukemia. Born in South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Waybus and Elsie Bruce.

She retired from her position as an Environmental Protection Specialist with the U.S. Civil Service after 26 years of dedicated and recognized hard work, including being named the PWC Employee of the Year and awarded the Meritorious Civil Service Award. She had a strong faith in the Lord and was a member of Central Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA.

She shared her life with her husband of 31 years, Otho Jerome Baker; children, Michael Gilstrap (Carmen), Tracy Gilstrap Weiss, Heather Gilstrap Harrington, Jay Baker (deceased), David Baker (deceased), and Barbara Baker Jones; grandchildren Arielle Stromberg, Kyle Gilstrap, Claire Weiss, Camille Weiss and John Jones; sister Elaine Pace (deceased), brother Wade Bruce, very special cousin Julia Moody, sister-in-laws Carol Loyer (Hank) and Ruth Baker, nieces Lara Mortimer (Leon), and Joann Baker, and nephew Jimmy Baker. She also enjoyed a host of special friends, including Helen Stallings, Ronnie and Bobbie Palmer and Reggie Godsey.

The family would especially like to thank her doctors, Dr. Paul Conkling and Dr. Anthony LaRocco, their staffs and nurses, and the team at the SNGH Outpatient Infusion Center for their loving and dedicated care throughout her illness.

Evelyn, although humble, left an indelible mark on those who knew her, through her deep faith and her kind and generous spirit. She lived her unconditional love.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at 1:00 p.m and funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at the Baker-Foster Funeral Home, 5685 Lee Farm Lane, Suffolk, VA. Burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 3920 Airline Blvd., Chesapeake, VA.
