Obituary

PORTSMOUTH—Edith Mathilde Dodd, 83, passed away November 13, 2025. She was born in Bavaria (Landshut), Germany, to the late Ludwig and Mathilde Richter Hofmeister.

In her early years, she, through an elite invitation, was a cast member of the Die Landshuter Hochzeit festival in Landshut, a storied reenactment of the marriage of a Bavarian prince to a Polish princess in the year 1475.

A spectacular and beautiful Mother, she was also an avid horticulturist with a beautiful yard – a true lover of nature. She was often seen nurturing her flowers and plants along with her canine companion, Stevie. She even had special names for the wildlife that frequently visited her yard. Fat Albert the squirrel is going to miss her and her endlessly full bird feeder.

A long-time office manager for a busy oral surgery practice, she needed to keep busy after retirement and joined her Ladies' group at Church of St. Therese. She helped with the group's work to support church events, was famous for her bakery sale and Oktoberfest culinary support, and made rosaries for our troops abroad.

She was a soul that radiated love. Her family felt it greatly, and so did her many friends and neighbors.

In addition to her parents, Edith is predeceased by her husband, Cecil R. Dodd, two sisters and a nephew. She is survived by four children: Cheryl Dodd Duhon (James), Sylvia Dodd Powell (Brian), Gregory J. Dodd (Christen), Karen Dodd Brooks (George), eight grandchildren: Sean Howard (Sissy), Derek Howard (Erin), Brian Scott Powell, Jr., Matthew Powell, Garrett Brooks (Staci), Rachel Brooks, Mathilde Dodd, Andersen Dodd, five great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. In Germany, she is survived by a cousin Hans Hofmeister and his children, and niece, Edith, and nephew, Gregor. She is also predeceased by her longtime friend, James Williams, and her beloved pet, Stevie.

A Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 3rd at the Church of St. Therese, 4137 Portsmouth Blvd., Chesapeake. The family will receive friends an hour prior at the church. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
