Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of Dorothy Simpson Penello, 92, share the news of her recent passing on October 22, 2022. She was born to Mae Redmond Simpson and William Patrick Simpson in Birmingham, Alabama on June 4,1930.

Dot was predeceased by her husband, Julian A. Penello, Sr., and son Joey Penello. She is survived by her children, Anne P. Scribner and husband J.C., Anthony Penello and wife Janet, and Bill Penello. She was most proud of her grandchildren, Allison S. Gehman (Chris), Nicholas A. Scribner (Kristen), Meredith S. Mandel (Taylor) and Christopher A. Penello. She was blessed to be great-grandmother to Haley & Charlie Scribner, Jack & Webb Gehman, & Miles & Maggie Mandel. Aunt Dot was the only surviving aunt on both sides of the family, remaining close to her nieces and nephews.

Dot & Tony were both members of the class of 1947 of St. Joseph's High School. They hosted a 50th Reunion gathering at their home in 1997. Dot will always be remembered for her kindness and devotion to her friends and family. She always gave so much of herself for the benefit of others. Her faith was very important to her, and she offered prayers daily with her rosary in her hands. She will be sorely missed by those who loved her and those whose lives she touched.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 29, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 522 High St., Portsmouth. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to JDRF.org, or charity of choice, in Dot's memory. Her family remains grateful for her long life, she will forever remain in our hearts. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
