Obituary

David Archer Hibbitts died August 25, 2025 in Portsmouth, Virgina, of a sudden and unexpected illness. He was born to Louis and Jeannette Hibbitts and raised in Nashville, Tennessee.

As a child, he was awkward in the ways of the world at a time when few people understood or accepted developmental disabilities. He graduated from the University of Kentucky where he was sports editor of the University of Kentucky newspaper. He was always a fan of college basketball, and in Lexington he developed a love for horse racing. He was a sports journalist for newspapers in Kentucky and Tennessee until mental health issues made the rest of his adult life a struggle.

He lived independently in Portsmouth, Virginia and was supported by the residents of No. 1 Crawford Parkway condominium. Those who knew David understood that he was smart, quirky, and incredibly honest. He had a strong moral compass and always spoke the truth. He will be missed.

He is survived by his father Louis H. Hibbitts, Jr., brother Kirt Hibbitts, and aunt Martha Ann Rabon. The family requests that any memorials be made to Edmarc hospice for children in Portsmouth, Virginia, a local autism support charity, or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Twin Lakes retirement community in Burlington, North Carolina. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.
