PORTSMOUTH—Christofa "Christy" Lynch Bering, 80, died on March 31, 2026, after a determined battle with COPD.

Born in Portsmouth and a graduate of St. Paul's High School, she went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Madison College (now James Madison University). She served her community for over 35 years working for the City of Norfolk, Department of Human Services. She was a devoted wife and mother and lifelong avid reader who shared a love of mysteries with her beloved extended family.

Christy is predeceased by her husband of 28 years, Robert Bering; her parents, John and Alberta Lynch; and her sister and brother-in-law Jane Lynch Gallatin and Jim Gallatin. Left to grieve are her daughters Jennifer Koerner (Steve), Elizabeth Bering (Richie Sweeny), and Anne Bering; grandsons Henry Koerner, Jack Koerner, and Dylan Sweeny; nieces Christy Letsom and Meg Leeman (Tommy); as well as grandnephews Lew, Boyd, and Miller. She also leaves her cousin Joan Turner (Al) and extended Garrett family.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 17, at St. Paul Catholic Church, 522 High St., Portsmouth, followed by a burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk.
