Obituary

Our loving mother, Carol Mae Wallace Daniels, 80, died peacefully at home after a lengthy illness on Thursday, June 23, 2016. We are so thankful we were all able to be with her during her last days and especially thankful she had our Dad, her husband of sixty- one years, providing unwavering support and vigilant care, by her side. Carol was predeceased by her father and mother, Russell Emerson Wallace and Katherine Bowman Wallace of Newton Upper Falls, MA, a brother, Joseph Russell Wallace of Newton Upper Falls, MA, and a sister, Jean Wallace Rappenecker of Tulsa, OK.
Carol was born in Newton Uppers Falls, Massachusetts on June 16, 1936, where she spent her early years and where her cherished bond began with her girlfriends from down the street: Eleanor, Marylou, Maureen, and Nancy. At eighteen, she became a Coast Guard wife when she met and married her husband Amos (Tart) Daniels. Together, they lived in Norfolk, VA, New London, CT, Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD, Mobile, AL, Detroit, MI, Glen Burnie, MD, Fire Island, NY and Portsmouth, VA, where they eventually retired.
Carol was a wonderful mother. She provided the most important things every child needs: unconditional love, understanding and acceptance, and FUN. When we were young, she provided a special flair with birthdays and other holidays, but Christmas at Carol's was the best. To this day, it isn't Christmas for any of us until we've had a session of painting Christmas cookies, a tradition in our family for as long as anyone remembers. Carol was an avid Bridge player, enjoying both Club and Tournament Bridge, eventually earning the distinction of Bronze Life Master. She took great pleasure in creating silk flower arrangements, her favorite artistic expression. She was a member of the Coast Guard Officers' Wives' Club for several years and was a life member of the Green Pines Garden Club of Portsmouth. She was active in her church and in the community, quietly helping people who needed comfort or a helping hand in some way. She particularly enjoyed playing "Nickels" every Thursday night with a group of dear friends who have known each other for years. We know she treasured their company and friendship always.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Amos Raynor Daniels; three daughters, Charlene Daniels Sheets of Charlotte, NC, Cathy Daniels Peters and husband Mark of Chesapeake, VA, and Cynthia Daniels Gray and husband Hunter of Chesapeake, VA; six grandchildren, Heather Sheets of Concord, NC, Courtney Roberts and husband Matthew of Blacksburg, VA, Kelly Sheets of Charlotte, NC, Patrick Gray of Moyock, NC, Chelsea Peters of Norfolk, VA, and Matthew Peters of Norfolk, VA; two great-grandchildren, Ava and Tzipora Roberts of Blacksburg, VA; a sister, Joanne Wallace Dove of Sun City, AZ; as well as five nephews, six nieces, and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, VA, 23703. The viewing will be one hour prior to the Mass followed by a reception in Carolluzza Hall. Burial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cudworth Cemetery, Wanchese, NC, (Directions: From Hwy. 345 in Wanchese, take Old Wharf Road (SR 1168) and go about 0.1 mile.
